Arc Review – The Thrashers by Julie Soto

The Thrashers Cover

Julie Solo’s foray into the realm of YA thriller is an addictive, provocative read that instantly hooked me. The Thrashers explores the complexities of high school social system, encompassing themes from cliques to peer pressure to depression to socio-economical issues. It covers some of my favorite qualities of YA fiction – that vital time period where teenagers are trying to secure their futures and/or trying to get away from home. They try to do adult things but aren’t really adults yet.

The story begins with the tragic suicide of Emily Mills, a new student at New Helvetia High. The cops find Emily’s journal and fingers are pointed at The Thrashers, a 5 person group of popular privileged students, as evidence of bullying and assault builds up. Main character Jodi begins to untangle the web of mysteries surrounding Emily and coincidentally in her own friend group.

I love how each Thrasher has such distinct characterization. We have the movie star cute but emotionally removed leader, the high achieving girl, a loner rebel. They are the most popular kids in school but as the plot unravels, they become increasingly vulnerable and stripped down. Jodi is the one Thrasher doesn’t belong. She’s from an under privileged background, living in the bad part of town. Her position in the group comes from her childhood friendship with leader Zach. Julie Soto does an amazing job at making you sympathize with a character and 10 minutes later question his/her motives. Every character is complex and flawed.

I love the theme of belonging. I have always found it innately human but also frightening the obsessive nature that wanting it can foster. This ties in with other aspects of the book – body shaming, stalking, toxic behavior, codependency, rumor spreading.

I found this book to be a completely addictive twisty mix of mystery, thriller and high school drama with a paranormal twist. Would recommend to fans of Karen McManus, Holly Jackson, Pretty Little Liars and Veronica Mars. Just check triggers please! The Thrashers comes out May 6, 2025.

Thank you to Netgalley and Wednesday Books for the gifted arc. This is my honest review and my honest review concludes with come May, I’m going to need a physical copy.
